Problem: Ford F-150 has known issues with the 4.6L V8, 4.9L 6 Cylinder, 5.0L V8, 5.4L V8, or 5.8L V8 engine ejecting spark plugs. This will make a loud tapping or knocking noise with engine misfire at all speeds, and check engine light will illuminate.
The threads on the aluminum cylinder head are too short and soft, allowing pressure from combustion to overwhelm and destroy the threads.
When the spark plug blows out the cylinder head becomes damaged requiring repair of the spark plug port threads, or replacement of the cylinder head and cylinder head gasket.
Ford has recommended a method of repair for the cylinder head that prevents the spark plug from ejecting under future use. Replacement of all spark plugs is not necessary, but an updated spark plug design can help prevent this from happening in the future.

Ford F-150 Coolant Smell and Overheating With No Visible Coolant Leaks

Problem: 1997-2014 Ford F-150 can display symptoms of a coolant leak, including overheating, especially when the vehicle is idling, the strong smell of coolant from the engine, and illumination of the low engine coolant warning light.
This leak is difficult to locate and is often buried underneath the intake manifold. Coolant will only leak onto the ground in advanced stages of the problem. Coolant leaks from the heater tube in which coolant flows between the water pump and HVAC heater core.
When the connection for the tube begins to leak the coolant burns on the hot engine and produces a sweet smell that is unmistakably engine coolant.
Ford F-150 model years affected: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014

Problem: 1996-2001 Ford F-150 with all plastic intake manifold is known for engine overheating and coolant leak from the front of the manifold. This problem will often trigger the check engine light and low engine coolant warning light.
The engine coolant leak is from a factory defect which causes cracking on the intake manifold front coolant passage. This coolant leak will lead to engine overheating issues. Problem: 2009-2014 Ford F-150 with automatic climate control may have a problem with frequent fan speed changes.
Normally the A/C fan speed changes only to maintain a selected temperature but when the fan speed changes frequently and needlessly there is an issue with the fan speed control unit.
The fan speed control unit regulates the speed for the blower motor in order to maintain the temperature. When it fails, the fan will run at random settings, and the climate control will be inaccurate. Note that this does not affect the temperature of the air that comes from the vents. It affects the amount of air that comes from the vents.
