Ford Truck Repair Service FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
COOLING & HEATING SYSTEM
Ford Truck Little Or No Heat In Cabin
Problem: Heat may stop flowing from either from one or all the dash vents. Most often the problem is failure of a blend air door actuator.
Repair: Diagnosis; HVAC blend air door actuator replacement.
Ford truck Coolant Smell and Overheating With No Visible Coolant Leaks
Problem: Ford truck can display symptoms of a coolant leak, including overheating, especially when the vehicle is idling, the strong smell of coolant from the engine, and illumination of the low engine coolant warning light.
This leak is difficult to locate and is often buried underneath the intake manifold. Coolant will only leak onto the ground in advanced stages of the problem. Coolant leaks from the heater tube in which coolant flows between the water pump and HVAC heater core.
When the connection for the tube begins to leak the coolant burns on the hot engine and produces a sweet smell that is unmistakably engine coolant.
Engine affected: 5.4L V8
Repair: remedy can be complex and will often require removal of the intake manifold, heater tube, and possibly the water pump to perform heater tube connector replacement, Intake Manifold Gasket Replacement, and possibly a Water Pump Replacement depending on age and condition.
DRIVELINE
Ford truck Rear Differential Noise
Problem: noise from the rear differential when going around turns or after driving at highway speed for an extended period could be caused by a failing differential clutch kit.
Drive Trains affected: 2WD, 4WD, Automatic Transmission
Repair: Diagnosis; updated differential clutch replacement.
Ford truck Vibration or Noise at Highway Speed
Problem: vibration or noise at highway speed could be caused by front driveshaft joint wear.

Repair: front double cardan universal joint replacement, or front axle Shaft Replacement.
ELECTRICAL
Ford truck HVAC Blower Motor Only Works on High
Problem: 2004-2014 Ford truck with manual temperature and fan controls the blower motor only blowing air on certain settings. Commonly the fan will only run on the highest setting. Caused by failed blower motor resistor.
Repair: Diagnosis; Heater blower motor resistor replacement.
Ford truck Check Engine Light After Hesitation or Stalling
Problem: rough engine idle, hesitation on acceleration, and engine stalling on the Ford truck with Triton V8. Check Engine Light will turn on. Usually caused by failure of engine mass air flow sensor (MAF). Can be caused by air filter not being installed properly and sealed to the air filter housing which causes contamination of MAF sensor.
Repair: Check engine light diagnosis; check air filter and air filter housing; engine mass air flow sensor (MAF) replacement.
Ford truck Battery Light Due to Damaged Alternator Wire Harness Connector
Problem: The battery light may illuminate on the instrument panel because the alternator wire harness connector is damaged.
Repair: Diagnose; Alternator wire harness connector replacement.
Ford truck A/C Fan Speed Changing Constantly
Problem: Ford truck with automatic climate control may have a problem with frequent fan speed changes.
Normally the A/C fan speed changes only to maintain a selected temperature but when the fan speed changes frequently and needlessly there is an issue with the fan speed control unit.
The fan speed control unit regulates the speed for the blower motor in order to maintain the temperature. When it fails, the fan will run at random settings, and the climate control will be inaccurate. Note that this does not affect the temperature of the air that comes from the vents. It affects the amount of air that comes from the vents.
Repair: fan speed control unit replacement
ENGINE
Ford truck 5.4L V8 Engine Rough at Idle
Problem: Intermittent rough idle may be caused by the EGR sensor sticking, causing the EGR valve to stay slightly open.
Repair: diagnose; EGR valve replacement and EGR sensor replacement.
Ford truck Spark Plugs Difficult to Remove
Problem: truck Spark plugs seize into cylinder head and can be very difficult to remove. Spark plugs can break off in the cylinder head.
Engines affected: 4.9L 6 Cylinder, 5.0L V8, 5.4L V8, 5.8L V8, V8
Repair: broken spark plug removal and spark plug hole thread repair.
Ford Truck Ejection of Spark Plug From Cylinder Head
Problem: Ford truck has known issues with the 4.6L V8, 4.9L 6 Cylinder, 5.0L V8, 5.4L V8, or 5.8L V8 engine ejecting or blowing out spark plugs. This will make a loud tapping or knocking noise with engine misfire at all speeds, and check engine light will illuminate.
Cause: The threads in the aluminum cylinder head are too short and soft, allowing pressure from combustion to overwhelm and destroy the threads.
When the spark plug blows out the cylinder head becomes damaged requiring repair of the spark plug hole threads, or replacement of the cylinder head and cylinder head gasket.
Ford has recommended a method of repair for the cylinder head that prevents the spark plug from ejecting under future use. Replacement of all spark plugs is not necessary, but an updated spark plug design can help prevent this from happening in the future.
Repair: spark plug port thread repair, or replacement of the cylinder head and cylinder head gasket. Spark Plug Replacement.
Ford truck Ignition Coil Failure Due to Excessive Spark Plug Gap
Problem: Illuminated Check Engine Light and a rough running engine could indicate that one or more of the ignition coils has failed. Often times this is caused by excessive spark plug gap, usually due to not replacing spark plugs.
Repair: Check Engine Light Diagnosis & Testing; defective ignition coil replacement, coil boot replacement, spark plug replacement.

Problem: A ticking noise may develop from the engine due to a warped exhaust manifold.
Repair: exhaust manifold replacement.
Ford truck EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold Plugged With Sludge Causing Misfire

Repair: Cleaning clogged EGR passages; EGR Valve Replacement; engine sludge cleaning in cases of bad engine oil sludging.
